SDI by Jimmy Tonn

Traditionally, the intended use for a laser SDI system is to destroy
nuclear missiles at the height of their arc, so they don't hit the Earth
and cause a big mess. One day, some world leaders wised up and said, "Hey,
since we've got this great weapon, let's use it to blow up everything!"
Thanks to SDI INC., all of the lasers could only fire upwards and no one
could fire one at another sea-level country. Disappointed, the presidents
and kings left their lasers only for defense, but they were ready. Later,
a president decided to try out "The Button". Waves of nuclear missiles were
launched at a nearby country... Fortunately, that country was able to fend
off the nuclear attacks for a while with its laser. The insane president
was having so much fun firing missiles, he decided to send out paratroopers
to infiltrate the target's cities and shut down its SDI. When he ran out of
men to send, he shifted to livestock... Guess what! You get to man the laser
and blow stuff up!
The game starts out with a cheesy opening screen. Laugh at it for a minute
and then press a key. A screen will come on that says "Wave 1" for about 3
seconds. Then the game begins. Use the left mouse button to fire the laser
at anything that moves, but watch your laser battery; you have to take your
finger off of the button to let it recharge, and if it goes to zero, you'll
have to wait a few seconds before it even starts recharging. The green tanks
on the left represent your laser battery. The top tank is your normal tank,
and the lower one is your backup tank. When you run out of normal energy,
you'll dip into the backup. (The backup recharges a little bit slower than
the normal tank, and the storage capacity of the backup tank will increase
with each wave.) Your other weapon is the nuke, which wipes out everything
in the sky. You start out with five of these and get an extra one each wave.
You launch a nuke with the right mouse button. Make sure none of the enemy's
weapons reach the city below. Five hits and you're dead.
You progress to the next wave when you hit 20 enemies with the laser.
(And only with the laser; enemies killed with the nuke do not count as
hits.) There are 10 waves to complete. I only beat them all once without
cheating, see if you can beat my record :). Have fun.
This program was written in QuickBasic 4.5, with the help of a library
called "SVGAQB" (version 2.1 - By Zephyr Software). This is a very good
library and I would recommend it for any QuickBasic project. (I think there
are also versions available for C, Visual Basic Dos, and PowerBasic.) This
program (SDI) is freeware-you can copy it, give it to people, upload it to
BBS's, (provided the game is in its original archive) and you don't have to
pay anything, but the game is copyrighted, and cannot be reverse engineered,
decompiled, or dissasembled.
No warranties either expressed or implied. Though I've tested this on my
machine without any problems, I can't be held responsible for any damages.
If you want to give me lots of money, or have any questions or something,
I can be reached on Compuserve at 75022,401. (I don't want to give out my
address so that the ASPCA doesn't come to house for that cow thing. :))
